Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated by Tamilians at the end of the harvest season. Pongal is a four day festival which usually takes place at January. This sweet pongal also called as sakkarai pongal is made from newly harvested rice.
Preparation Time: 15minutes
Cooking Time: 45minutes
Ingredients:
- Raw Rice / Pacharisi - 1 cup
- Yellow Moong Dal / Pasi Paruppu - ½ cup
- Jaggery / Vellam - 2 cup or extra as your taste
- Milk - 5 cups
- Cashew - 15
- Sultanas / Kismis - 3 tblspn
- Cardamom / Yelakai - 3
- Coconut - ½ cup (optional)
- Ghee - 2tsp
Preparation:
- Take vellam and add 1cup water to it and boil and dissolve it
- Grind coconut and keep
Procedure:
- Pour 1 tsp ghee
- Add moong dal and fry
- Add rice to that and soak this both for around 15 mins
- Then drain water and put this in a pressure cooker along with milk and cover with a lid
- Cook for 3 whistles
- Remove it and keep aside
- Then add 1 cup of water to vellam and boil, and dissolve it
- Pour this into cooker over dal and rice
- Take a pan and add ghee in it
- Add cashews, kismis and cardamom in it and fry
- Now add this into rice mixture and stir
- Grind some coconut in a mixer and add to rice mixture
- Pour some ghee over it for additional flavor and taste
- Sweet pongal is now ready!!
Step by Step Procedure:
Pour 1 tsp
ghee. Add moong
dal and fry
Add rice to

Note:
The color of pongal depends on the jaggery you use. Use dark color jaggery for a dark brown color
